Ich liebe "Was wäre, wenn..."-Geschichten, und diese Variante von Blake Crouch hat auf goodreads.com überwiegend sehr positive Bewertungen. Tatsächlich wird der Roman als "the most mind-blowing and twisted thriller of the year" angepriesen. Entsprechend groß war meine Vorfreude... aber wie so oft musste ich feststellen, dass die (Lese-) Geschmäcker eben verschieden sind. "Dark Matter" ist keineswegs schlecht; es ist phasenweise einigermaßen spannend und hat mich halbwegs gut unterhalten. Begeistert hat es mich allerdings zu keinem Zeitpunkt.Die ganze Story wird in einem ziemlich hohen Tempo erzählt. Auf wenigen Seiten lernt man Jason, Hauptfigur und Ich-Erzähler der Geschichte, kennen. Man bekommt einen kurzen Einblick in seine Vergangenheit, seinen Alltag und seine Familie... und dann geht es Schlag auf Schlag: 400 Seiten lang hetzt Jason durch unendliche Welten, flieht vor gewissenlosen Wissenschaftlern, vor Naturkatastrophen und Epidemien und schließlich vor sich selbst. Der arme Mann hat quasi keine Zeit zum Durchatmen, die eigentlich faszinierende Grundidee eines Multiversums dient nur als Startschuss für jede Menge Action. Das sorgt für Spannung und ein schnelles, aber doch ziemlich anspruchsloses Leseerlebnis. So etwas hat viele Fans und ist für mich zwischendurch in Ordnung. Trotzdem habe ich mir von der guten Grundidee einfach mehr versprochen und bin nun doch etwas enttäuscht.

Kurze, aber prägnante Sätze wechselten in passenden Momenten mit Beschreibungen ab und erschufen so ein plastisches Bild der Umgebung, ohne den Lesefluss oder den Story-Fortschritt zu stören. Das selbe gilt für die physikalischen Erklärungen, die klar und verständlich die Mechaniken dieser Geschichte sehr gut erklären.„Aren't we both lost in worlds that, for reasons beyond our control, no longer align with our identity?“Fazit: Spannender Sci-Fi Thriller, der physikalische Gedankenspiele wörtlich nimmt und drum herum ein Abenteuer der besonderen Art bastelt.
The books premise is actually quite interesting (esp. for someone like me, working as a physicist), but then it does not use this to its full potential. In general many things are only quickly sketched and not fleshed out. It reads more like a movie script than a book - it leaves a lot of room for details to be changed.That being said - if you want a fun ride which grabs your full attention for a day or two and creates the 'but what happens next?' feel, then you are encouraged to read that one. Also the kind of 'director-like' style manages to set the mood and scene very nicely - which pulls you right into the story.In short: has its deficits as a book, but is a fun read and tickles your imagination just enough.
I did not understand, why the book is called "Dark Matter". I believe dark matter has never been mentioned. Furthermore reading the book was like watching a movie. While the is nothing wrong with watching a movie, which I enjoy myself quite regularily, I think book can and should present a perspective different from movies: e.g. more character insights. But the book seems to want to be a template for a movie (the rights have been sold to Sony Pictures, so it was successful). And I cannot really blame the author. We all have to feed our families, and Mr. Crouch's books have already been made a tv series. Like the Hollywood mainstream we have a lot of action and not so much character development an character insights. This is my main point of critic of a book with a very interesting underlaying idea, especially at the end. An entertaining read, so: 3 stars.
Meinung:Dies war mein erstes Buch, das ich komplett im englischen Original gelesen habe. Und ich war begeistert. Blake Crouch’s Schreibstil ist sehr authentisch und sehr gut zu lesen. Er schafft es auf eine ganz unglaubliche Art und Weise Gefühle zu beschreiben, dass man ganz genau weiß, was er sagen will. Die Handlung selber ist zwar fiktiv und unverkennbar zum SiF-Genre zu zählen. Die Gedankengänge seines Protagonisten gehen aber viel tiefer und sind hochaktuell. Gedanken, die sich im Laufe seines Lebens sicher schon einmal jeder gestellt hat. Blake Crouch lässt durch seine Art und Weise des Ausdrucks die Bilder direkt vor Augen entstehen. Immer wieder neue Wendungen im Leben seines Hauptdarstellers halten die Spannung auf höchstem Niveau. Der Schluss ist sehr überraschend.Ich war von diesem Buch von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite gefesselt. Und gerade die englische Sprache konnte manches ausdrücken, dass im Deutschen sicher nicht ganz so treffend gewesen wäre.Fazit:Sehr spannend und gefühlvoll. Ein Mensch auf der Suche nach dem, was für ihn im Leben wichtig ist. Sehr empfehlenswert, egal ob im englischen Original oder in der deutschen Übersetzung.
