Michael Smith is an authority on Polar exploration and author of the best-selling biography of Tom Crean, An Unsung Hero. His other books are I Am Just Going Outside, a biography of Captain Oates (2002), Polar Crusader about Sir James Wordie (2004), and Great Endeavour - Ireland's Antarctic Explorers (2010). Michael has also written two books for children, Tom Crean - Iceman and Shackleton - The Boss. He contributes to TV and radio documentaries and lectures frequently on Polar history. Michael was a business and political journalist with The Guardian and The Observer.

Ein Buch, das endlich auch demjenigen gerecht wird, der unverdienterweise so selten Erwähnung findet neben John Franklin -Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier, aufgrund seiner irischen Abstammung schon zu Lebzeiten von der Admiralität benachteiligt und auch später viel zu selten beachtet.Gründlichst recherchiert, fesselnd geschrieben und sicherlich mehr als nur ein Puzzleteil im Gesamtbild der Geschichte derPolarforschung. Ein Muss für alle, die sich für dieses Thema interessieren und nicht nur an der Oberfläche kratzen wollen.
Das Buch hinterläßt ein nagendes Gefühl empörender Ungerechtigkeit. Es beschreibt das Leben und die Taten eines kompetenten, fleißigen, sympathischen, aber ewig unterschätzten, unterbezahlten und romantisch unglücklichen Menschen, der nicht durch seine zahlreichen Erfolge ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit rückte, sondern in seinem größten Versagen zum Helden wurde.Ausführlich beschreibt der Autor die durch eine große Faktensammlung untermauerten Stationen eines Lebens, das – vermutlich – in der Arktis endete, beim Versuch, die Fehler der britischen Navy und eines allzu unbedarften Expeditionsleiters auszubügeln. Captain Croziers letzte Aufgabe betraf nicht seine seemännischen oder wissenschaftlichen Qualifikationen: Nachdem die Suche nach der Nordwestpassage, an der er als Stellvertreter des Expeditionsleiters John Franklin teilnahm, in einer Katastrophe endete, war es an ihm, einen Haufen erschöpfter, kranker und verhungernder Männer Hunderte Kilometer übers Eis zu scheuchen, mit tonnenschweren Schlitten im Schlepptau, um wenigstens ihre Leben zu retten.Obwohl die Expedition spurlos verschwand und es nur wenige Zeugnisse darüber gibt, was mit ihr geschehen sein könnte, weiß man doch recht genau, wer in den folgenden Jahren was getan hat, zu welchem Zweck manche Handlungen dienten und inwiefern sich die Teilnehmer ihres Schicksals bewußt waren.Archäologische Funde helfen da weiter, wo die Beteiligten nicht mehr selbst sprechen oder schreiben konnten. I watched AMC's The Terror and immediately had to read more - What happened to Crozier? A man looking for love in all the wrong places. I finished Last Man Standing today and, while The Terror imagines much, this book does not actually change the story - it leaves what happened still left up to imaginations and perhaps next year's science. But, the ships have been discovered, bones found, not enough notes found to write the rest of the story. I am really enjoying this read, the style, the illustrations and the facts that leave the truth alone, yet to be known. A worthy read for anyone interested in the NW Passage, in Crozier, Franklin . . may interest was in the ships that survived the gnarly South Pole. This book shines a light on a new word "cocksure" of which that the Admiralty was plentiful and that, the Navy's hubris, was the actual demise of Crozier, Franklin, Scott, Shackleton and their crews. Michael Smith, the author here, did a good research and held true to the story.
Great story.of suffering mixed with success. A clear reminder that the greatest men are not necessarily the ones that are acknowledging during their lifetimes but years later when the full measure of a man or woman may be taken!
This is a really interesting biography of Captain Crozier, often forgotten polar explorer. Although the Terror and Erebus have now been located this book gives much insight into polar exploration in the 1880's and Crozier's contributions.
After watching the TV episodes of "The Terror" I was interested in the life of Capt. Crozier. This was a very interesting book of his early life and the many years he spent in the Royal Navy. He certainly did not get the credit he deserved for all that he accomplished, but the Royal Navy had its pecking order and he did not fit in. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the early explorations of both the North and South poles.
Very interesting life story which gives a good insight into the workings of the Royal Navy and it's Admiralty. The descriptions of the many expeditions became a bit repetitive but I suppose that that's to be expected. All in all an interesting read.
